Getting the promotion you want and deserve in 2023

Once we have found the role we love in a company we want to stay with, often, we will begin to think about moving up through the company levels to gain more responsibility, widen our learnings and, of course, earn more money. It can be difficult, however, to know when it’s the right time to go for a promotion, whether the position has come up in the workplace or you are planning to have a discussion with your boss. Have you proved you are a competent and reliable employee? Do you have enough experience in your current position, and are you ready to move up the ladder? This month, Perfect Team takes a look at how you can show you are ready for that next promotion and, most importantly, how to secure that promotion in 2023!

5 top tips for getting that promotion

Being good at your job

This may seem like common sense, but often employees will focus too much on moving to the next step in their career without stopping to be good at the job they are currently in. Don’t forget; you are being paid for the role you are currently in, so you need to ensure you are working to the best of your ability rather than always focusing on the step up. Perfect your time management skills so you can easily handle multiple emails, calls and messages. Focus on completing your work to a high standard and try to take on additional tasks that will help you to grow as an employee and show you are ready to make that commitment to the next position.

Support the team around you

Your work is not just about you. Job roles are rarely completely independent, and you will often find team members around you. Use this as an opportunity to become a leader in your team, support others and show an interest in helping them succeed. Be aware, however, that there is a fine balance between being a leader that people can look up to and being a leader that others refuse to work with because of their attitude and air of superiority. Don’t forget that your boss is part of your team and may need some support as well. Try to make their lives a little easier to manage by taking on tasks that they don’t have time to do – but don’t do this at the expense of your own work, or this will go against you for any promotion in the future.

Continue to work on your own improvement

Learning never stops, even after you’ve aced your current position. By undertaking a course or receiving training in a new area of business, you open yourself up to new opportunities and demonstrate to your employer that you’re always looking for ways to improve and better yourself. If there’s somebody at your company who you admire and whose opinion you trust, ask them to be your mentor – they can offer helpful advice and tips on how to improve your performance at work. And finally, once you’ve spoken to your boss about your career goals, ask for their input on what areas they think you need to work on so that together, you can develop a plan on how best to achieve those aims.

Show up with the right attitude

Good workplace relationships are essential for anyone looking to get ahead in their career. Being seen as an approachable and confident employee will make you a desirable team member that others will want to work with. You can demonstrate these qualities by approaching your work with confidence and being competent without needing much supervision. It’s also important to contribute to meetings and discussions by offering your thoughts and opinions on the issues at hand. However, it’s just as important to be considerate of what you say and to listen to others so that you don’t come across as someone who only thinks about themselves.

Your boss should know of your achievements

It’s essential to keep your boss in the loop when it comes to your successes at work – they may not always be aware of how well you’re doing unless you make an effort to update them regularly. This is a great way to show how much value you bring to the company, whether it’s through problem-solving, streamlining processes or helping out employees. You should avoid coming across as boastful, but be confident in sharing your successes (both individual and team achievements) with your boss. This will create a positive atmosphere within the team and demonstrate that you’re a strong leader too.

Asking for a promotion when you are ready

Asking for a promotion can be a bit daunting, but if you feel like you’re ready for the next step, it’s important to speak up. When preparing for a conversation with your boss about a promotion, consider what information you’ll need to have on hand. You should be able to articulate why you feel you deserve a promotion and what value you’ll bring to the role. Be confident in your abilities and back up your claims with examples. If you go into the meeting prepared and with a positive attitude, you’re more likely to get the outcome you’re hoping for. Whilst there is no perfect time for a promotion, you do have to consider when it will be most appropriate to bring up with your employee. If your company is going through hardships and is letting people go, this is not an appropriate time for a promotion discussion and could actually lead to damaging your reputation within the company. However, if your company is performing well, if they have just taken on a major deal, or if profits are considerably up for the year, this is a much better time. Asking for a promotion takes time, and you should be prepared to have ongoing discussions about your journey, what you have learned and what you need to do to continue to prove you are a worthy candidate for any openings that may come up. Once you have had the initial discussion with your boss, prove through your attitude, work ethic and ability that you are a good fit for promotion and ensure that you are regularly discussing your future at the company.
