It goes without saying that recruiting staff into your business is certainly a time consuming process and at worst it can be slow and painful. So once you have reached the point of appointing someone new to join your team the focus needs to be on them as they join you in those all important first few days and weeks.
It is a well accepted fact that a new employee will have formed a very strong opinion of their new employers at the end of the first week so it is so important that you plan their arrival carefully, spend time with them explaining what your business is all about and what is expected from them in their role. This will all help to craft the right type of impression.
The best businesses will have a pre prepared induction programme for new staff and this will help guide the new starter through those crucial first days. You might want to think about the following areas
Spend time with your new starter as the business owner; give them the background to the business how it started and your beliefs and vision for where you are going.
Outline how important their role is in the business and what you need them to do, who they need to work with and most importantly where are the facilities are, kitchen and staff breakout area and most importantly, “The little room”.
At the end of the week its sometimes a good idea to arrange a lunch or after work drink so the week can be reviewed in an informal atmosphere, this can be a powerful way of making the new starter feel at home and part of a team.
Have some informal and formal review dates in the diary so progress can be monitored over the first month to six weeks. This enables both parties to share any successes or concerns and by keeping an open dialogue it helps remove any misconceptions or misunderstandings that may arise.
After all the investment is staff is not only about the recruitment process it’s about the time the employee stays with your business so continuing the time investment in the first few weeks can really help.
